Sports Brain Science Project Uncovering new methods to train “mind” and “skill”

The Sports Brain Science Project is conducting research into methods to support improvements in sports performance. It is not, however, simply a study of ways to enhance muscular strength and cardiopulmonary function. The research aims to explore methodology for effectively improving performance to enable athletes to gain optimal control over their bodies and foster a better command of their mental state.
Such aims call for brain science knowledge that can unlock the mysteries of “implicit brain functions”, as well as the application of advanced info-communication technology (ICT). The goal is to establish new training methods capitalizing on recently gained knowledge in the field of brain science, as well as using the latest ICT, such as wearable sensors, virtual reality and machine learning, to collect and analyze big data. This is research to “train the athletic brain”.

Boosting muscular strength and cardiopulmonary function are indispensable to improving sporting prowess. However, these factors alone are not sufficient. In sport it is said that “mind, skill and body” are indivisible, and as such gains in performance can be expected once athletes combine a resilient and lithe physique with the “skills” to optimally control theirs bodies and the “mind” to foster a better command of their mental state. So what does one have to do to achieve this? We asked Makio Kashino, leader of the Sports Brain Science Project’s efforts to answer this challenge, his research team, athletes and related others, to explain how to train an “athletic brain”.
